A year-long journey of applied inquiry, collaboration, and conscious living.

In a world increasingly defined by fragmentation, burnout, and transactional learning, the idea of living one’s inquiry can feel like a distant dream. But what if research wasn’t limited to academia? What if real-world projects could be rooted in inner growth, collaboration, and the spirit of service?

Welcome to the Research Fellowship at the Auroville Centre — a unique opportunity for seekers, professionals, and changemakers to immerse themselves in the vision and experiment of Auroville, the international township founded on the ideals of human unity and conscious evolution.

This isn’t just a research posting. It’s an invitation to live and work differently, to co-create meaningfully, and to align your skills with a purpose larger than yourself.

    Who is it for?

Whether you’re a fresh graduate looking for your next step, a mid-career professional seeking a sabbatical, or an independent thinker exploring new frontiers — the Research Fellowship welcomes individuals from all walks of life.

We’re looking for people who are:

    • Curious, open-minded, and self-driven
    • Deeply committed to inner and outer growth
    • Comfortable with ambiguity and experimentation
    • Eager to contribute meaningfully to Auroville’s evolution

Disciplinary backgrounds don’t matter as much as intention and alignment. Whether you’re from education, ecology, arts, tech, policy, or spirituality — what counts is your desire to work with consciousness at the core.

    What You’ll Do

As a Research Fellow, you won’t be boxed into traditional silos. You’ll be encouraged to combine inquiry and action — to ask questions, observe, create, build, and reflect, all in real time.

Each Fellow works on a thematic area based on the Centre’s focus — for example:

    • Integral Education
    • Sustainable Living
    • Alternative Economy
    • Urban Design & Planning
    • Cultural Research
    • Peace & Conflict Resolution

Your final contribution could take many forms:

    • An online or in-person course
    • A publication or research paper
    • A campaign or workshop
    • A prototype or solution model
    • A public event or community offering

You’ll be placed in collaboration with relevant Auroville units and projects, working with mentors and peers while navigating the unique socio-cultural ecosystem of Auroville.

    The Environment

Auroville is not your typical workplace or campus.

It’s a living laboratory — a city-in-the-making built on the ideals of unity, equality, sustainability, and the evolution of consciousness. You’ll be living in a community where people from over 60 nations experiment with new ways of being, learning, working, and relating.

There are no formal hierarchies here. No competitive rat races. No degrees or designations that determine your worth.

Instead, what matters is sincerity, adaptability, contribution, and growth.

It can be disorienting at first. But for those ready to step outside the familiar, it becomes an unforgettable space of self-discovery.

    Support Ecosystem

We understand that this kind of immersion can feel overwhelming without guidance. That’s why we’ve built in a structured yet flexible support system:

    • Monthly Orientation: Every new Fellow joins a collective onboarding that dives into Auroville’s history, philosophy, challenges, and ethics.
    • Thematic Mentorship: Each Fellow is paired with mentors — both from the Centre and Auroville’s field experts — who provide feedback and inspiration throughout the journey.
    • Peer Circles: Fellows meet regularly to share progress, insights, roadblocks, and breakthroughs — learning from one another and building bonds that last well beyond the fellowship.
    • Cross-Centre Collaboration: If your inquiry spans multiple areas (say, education and environment), we encourage you to work across Centres — enriching your perspective and project outcomes.

You’ll never be alone — even when you’re forging new paths.

    Commitment & Contribution Fee

Unlike most fellowships that pay stipends, the ACF model operates differently. Research Fellows are asked to contribute ₹10,000/month.

    Why?

Because this is not a job. It’s not a course. It’s a collaborative field where each Fellow’s presence is an investment — in time, energy, and spirit. The monthly contribution:

    • Ensures sincerity and continuity
    • Supports shared activities (mentorship, workshops, logistics)
    • Fuels the Centre’s ecosystem, including support for Senior Fellows and facilitators

It is not a “fee” for access. It’s a gesture of belonging and responsibility — a part of Auroville’s evolving experiment in value exchange.

If this amount is a barrier, you may apply for partial waivers or seek funding from partner institutions, NGOs, or sponsors.

    How to Apply

We accept rolling applications — which means you can apply anytime. However, onboarding begins at the start of each month, so it’s best to plan ahead.

    Application Process:

    1. Expression of Interest Form
A simple form where you share your background, intention, and initial theme interest.
    2. Proposal Submission
You’ll be asked to share a short concept note (1–2 pages) on the area you’d like to explore, and how you see yourself contributing.
    3. Dialogue with Centre Leads
A call or in-person conversation to explore fit, expectations, and potential Centre alignment.
    4. Confirmation & Onboarding
Once accepted, you’ll be slotted into the next orientation cycle and introduced to your mentor and project node.

We recommend a minimum commitment of one year to allow for meaningful depth and output.

    Final Thoughts

Becoming a Research Fellow at the Auroville Centre is not just about academic exploration or project-building.

It’s about becoming more of who you are — through friction, flow, dialogue, creativity, and presence.

It’s about being part of a collective consciousness experiment that has been quietly evolving for over five decades.

And it’s about asking: How do I live my values? How do I serve a dream that belongs to all humanity?

If those questions stir something in you — then maybe, just maybe, this is your next step.
